How to Become a Product Tester

What is Product Testing? A product tester is often needed to try, experience and evaluate the product in advance before it is available in the market. Depending on the company, you can do product testing from home or at their office.

What is Product Testing?

Whenever a company develops a prototype of their product - whether it is a food product, skincare product, software or computer games - a product tester is often needed to try, experience and evaluate the product in advance before it is available in the market. Usually, product testing is done when the product is still in the design phase. Depending on the company, you can do product testing from home - in which case the company will ship the product to you - or at their office. For beauty, skincare or baby products, the product developers will usually allow you to do the product testing from home. Companies that develop products such as electronic devices may require you to test the products at their office or labs.

Are Product Testers Paid?

There are product developers that pay the product testers for testing their products. Huge corporations usually pay cash to their product testers. Type of payment and payment method will also vary from company to company. Certain companies may offer gift cards or other prizes and rewards instead of cash. However, there are also many others that just let you keep the product as 'payment'.

Although many people get involved in product testing for cash, it is not a type of work that people do full time. It is not something that can make you earn tens of thousands per year, either. Most people who are involved in product testing choose to do it as a side income, as well as because it is a fun and rewarding experience.

How to Become a Product Tester

The first thing you need to keep in mind is to be aware of scams. To avoid this, you have to be sure to apply with legitimate consumer product testing companies. A legitimate consumer product testing company or product testing panel will never request for any fees for you to participate. There are also websites that offer a list of paid product testing jobs and opportunities that you can apply for. Normally, companies will explain product testing procedures to their testers. In general, the product testing process is actually very simple. Once the products are sent, you have to use and document your experience using the product, such as the features that you like and dislike. Companies may also provide you with a survey to fill in and give feedback on the product. Payment is given when the company receives your product evaluation report.

No specific qualification is required to be a product tester. However, you do have to be enthusiastic in using and experiencing the product that you test. Attention to details is also another important characteristic of a product tester, especially when you are testing products such as games and software application.
